About the role:
The Lead Cloud Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the cloud infrastructure that powers our SaaS products. This position requires deep expertise in AWS, CI/CD pipelines, Datadog, Docker, and Terraform. As a technical leader, you will guide a team of cloud engineers in building scalable, reliable,
and secure cloud environments that support our rapidly growing business.
In this role, you will be responsible for architecting cloud solutions, automating infrastructure deployment, and ensuring optimal performance and monitoring through tools like Datadog. You will also lead the development and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines, leveraging Docker and Terraform to create efficient and reproducible workflows.
The Lead Cloud Engineer collaborates closely with engineering and security teams to implement best practices, optimize cloud resources, and contribute to the overall success of our technology initiatives. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who is passionate about cloud technologies and has a proven track record of leading cloud engineering teams to deliver robust and cost-effective solutions.
For Sydney-based staff, we offer a hybrid work model with three days in the office and two days working from home. For those based outside of Sydney, this role is fully remote.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, planning, and implementation of cloud infrastructure projects, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
- Guide development teams in integrating new services with the cloud infrastructure, maintaining high performance and availability using tools like Datadog.
- Implement and uphold strict security measures and cost-efficient strategies across all cloud environments, ensuring compliance and budget control.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and continuous improvement within the cloud engineering team, fostering an agile and innovative culture.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Extensive experience in cloud engineering, with deep expertise in AWS services, architecture, and best practices.
- Strong experience in CI/CD pipeline design and implementation, including tools such as Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitLab CI, or similar.
- Proficiency in containerisation technologies like Docker, and experience in deploying and managing containerised applications.
- Advanced knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, with a proven track record of automating infrastructure deployments.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Datadog, ensuring comprehensive monitoring and alerting across cloud environments.
- Strong understanding of cloud security principles and experience in implementing and maintaining robust security measures.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of engineers, with a focus on fostering collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues within cloud environments.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in cost management and optimisation within cloud environments, with a focus on controlling expenses while maintaining performance.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working in an agile environment, contributing to continuous improvement and iterative development processes.
- Proactive, results-driven approach with a strong focus on delivering value to the business through innovative cloud solutions.
