Role Purpose

Cutler Merz Policy and Strategy team supports governments and organisations to design, implement and comply with constantly evolving energy policy. The consultant role is to apply a deep understanding of the Australian energy regulatory environment to provide detailed policy analysis and advice to Cutler Merz clients.

Consultant role responsibilities

- Provide regulatory, strategic and technical advice to develop policy and strategy solutions for complex energy problems.






- Apply qualitative and quantitative analytical strength to solve problems accurately and quickly, with the ability to derive and communicate insights and recommendations, backed by clear evidence.
- Develop and run analysis with energy market models
- Manage projects to meet client objectives on time and within budget.
- Deliver high quality, client-facing reports and deliverables.
- Work in a collaborative team environment, and build trusted relationships with clients, management and project teams.
- Develop business opportunities by establishing external professional networks (e.g. through client contacts).

Qualifications and Experience

- Tertiary qualifications at degree level in a scientific or policy field.
- At least 3 years of experience in a policy and strategy role (ideally in the energy sector or a related technical field)
- Good working knowledge of the energy sector in Australia, which includes current challenges of the sector, an understanding of how the sector needs to transition.






- Experience with policy settings surrounding energy systems (i.e. generation, distribution and transmission networks) and technologies.
- Strong understanding of relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks (including the National Electricity Rules).
- Ability to bring together strong analytical skills with an understanding of client needs and the broader strategic and political context
- Collaboration and engagement - ability to find the best solution by accommodating and balancing multiple and often competing objectives and interests
- Comfortable with uncertainty and capable of applying a flexible and adaptive approach to meet project objectives.
- Strong report writing skills to deliver key outputs to clients






- Creativity and curiosity - open to exploring new and innovative approaches to problem solving and responsive to emerging trends
- Skill at breaking down complex issues and using information from diverse sources to support evidence-based policy
- Strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills, including presenting qualitative and quantitative data
- A deadline orientation, with strong project management expertise.
- A personable and professional approach, with excellent communication and client skills.
