Position: Sustainability and Climate Resilience Officer
Location: Sydney
Type: Contract

Duration: 6 months

The Role

- The implementation of actions and development of new initiatives that ensure Council and the community are moving towards resilience especially in the face of climate change.
- The implementation of monitoring and reporting protocols in order to achieve improved climate change outcomes for Council's operations.
- Facilitating appropriate environmental engagement activities that address community needs.
- Facilitating appropriate climate change programs that address the needs of our community.
- Influence a positive sustainability culture across Council.






- Ensure all allocated tasks are completed in an efficient and competent manner within the time frame specified.
- If this role is identified as a position which undertakes coordination of volunteer programs as well as the supervision of volunteers when they are on site (not including work experience placements) you will be required to:
- familiarise yourself with our volunteer's policy and standard.
- implement the policy and follow this standard in a consistent and fair manner.
- undertake training needed to effectively coordinate volunteers.
- allocate sufficient time to volunteer coordination.

Key Responsibilities

Administration

- Raise awareness of the global climate crisis and achieve policy outcomes in mitigating, and adapting to, the impacts of climate change.
- Provide sustainability guidance, diligence and consistency to internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide advice and input into the identification and effective management of sustainability risks.
- Assist with coordinating sustainability across the environmental, social,





financial and governance areas within Council.
- Implement corporate and community environmental sustainability programs and projects that align with Council's Environmental Sustainability Policy.
- Implement and evaluate new innovative sustainability and resilience related policies, projects and programs.
- Establish collaborative partnerships with relevant organisations and stakeholders.
- Dissemination of relevant information to stakeholders with a focus on digital platforms.
- Document all work and keep files and records up to date.
- Report to the Coordinator Resilience.
- Perform other relevant tasks assigned by the Coordinator Resilience.

Resilience programs

- Implementation of a Resilience Strategy for Council and the City.






- Liaise with sections of Council for improved environmental and climate outcomes.
- Build a QBL culture within sections of Council, in particular:
- Purchasing and procurement
- Asset management
- Establishing effective reporting protocols
- Sustainable events

- Develop and run Staff training and inductions.
- Assist in the production and updating of relevant Council documents.
- Provide strategic direction for sustainability and resilience initiatives.Ensure the availability of accessible and relevant information about sustainability and resilience.
- Assist in writing grant and award submissions for the section.

Communication

- Provision of efficient service to all customers including:
- Respond to VIP and customer service requests (both TRIM and RMs)





in accordance with nominated performance criteria.
- Answer telephone and "counter" enquiries, as required.
- Identification of system changes required to improve the quality and timeliness of sustainability and resilience outcomes, programs and services.

- Regularly review environmental information published on our website.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Represent Council on relevant working groups, committees and boards.
- Prepare correspondence and reports, as required.

Corporate representation and image

- In all dealings and activities on behalf of Council, act in accordance with Council's Code of Conduct and actively promote a positive image of Council. To promote a positive image means:






- Behaving in a manner that helps achieve the objectives and interests of Council.
- Actively creating goodwill by using/demonstrating positive helpful, cooperative, proper, supportive and ethical behaviour, at all times.

- The management of volunteers if required by the role.
- Other duties as directed consistent with the operations of Council.

Qualifications

Essential

- Relevant Degree in environmental science or equivalent
- Solid industry experience supported by environmental sustainability experience.
- Solid knowledge of, and experience in climate change and/or sustainability related policy development processes and planning, incl. engagement in government decision-making processes
- Proven skills in project management including planning, establishing priorities,





evaluation and allocation and management of resources and budget
- Solid experience in report writing including ability to measure, evaluate and meet reporting requirements.
- Advocacy, interpersonal, presentation, verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to operate independently and as part of a team.

Desirable

- Relevant local government experience
- Previous experience in a sustainability role including research, projects and promoting sustainability best practice.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation/regulations
- Computer literate with proficiency in the use of Microsoft products such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
- Availability to work flexible working hours.
